Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Sally Wang, MD, FHM
Brigham & Women's Hospital

Course Overview:
Using a combination of didactic sessions and hands-on training, participants will learn, review, and perform best practices for the most common medical procedures that hospitalists perform in the inpatient setting including: vascular access, paracentesis, thoracentesis, and lumbar puncture. The use of ultrasound for procedural guidance will be introduced and reviewed. Skin biopsy, fine needle aspiration (FNA), and arthrocentesis will also be demonstrated and practiced. With an optimal faculty-to-participant ratio that maximizes the learning experience, non-human tissue models, simulator models, and cutting-edge ultrasound machines will be employed to teach proper techniques for essential procedures.

NOTE: To maximize your learning experience, it is recommended (but not required) that this course be coupled with the "Portable Ultrasound for the Hospitalist Pre-Course" taking place in the afternoon.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe and demonstrate the proper techniques for performing invasive procedures, utilizing real-time ultrasound when appropriate.
  • Explain how and when to apply the use of real-time ultrasound guidance for invasive procedures.
  • Employ wide sterile barriers (WSB) for sterile procedures and utilize proper sharps safety techniques.

Course Overview:
Portable ultrasound is widely considered to be the stethoscope of the 21st century, and hospitalists are on the front line of this technological revolution. As ultrasound machines are becoming less expensive and more portable, it is essential that hospitalists learn how to capably apply real-time ultrasound technology for the benefit of patients. This course, being offered for the first time at HM11, will use a combination of didactic sessions and hands-on training to reveal an entirely new world of looking at your patients through the lens of ultrasound. It will start with the basics of ultrasound technology and then dive into its myriad of applications for diagnostic and interventional purposes. Essential maneuvers such as screening for deep vein thrombosis (DVT); basic cardiac evaluations; scanning for pleural effusions, pneumothoraces, and ascites; and vascular and organ imaging will all be elucidated in an interactive atmosphere highly conducive to learning. Participants will experience excellent participant-to-trainer ratio, live models for practicing, cutting-edge equipment, and the expert faculty and trainers gathered from across the country.

NOTE: To maximize your learning experience, it is recommended (but not required) that this course be coupled with the "Medical Procedures for the Hospitalist Pre-Course" taking place in the morning.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the essential functions of a portable ultrasound machine and the basic physics of ultrasound technology.
  • Differentiate between the different types of ultrasound probes and select the correct probe for various bedside applications.
  • Visualize normal and abnormal vascular and solid organ structures on patients as a basis for real-time, bedside diagnostic decision-making.
